Resonance Preview: Ditching the Slingshot for a Grappling Hook in Sun-Drenched Crete

Hands-on impressions of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy reveal Sophia's aggressive new combat style, color-matching light puzzles, and a folk score.

Recent hands-on previews of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy—covering chapters five and six of the PC build—reveal a prequel that deviates significantly from the defensive, desperate survival loop of its predecessors. Following a younger Sophia 15 years before the events of Requiem, this standalone entry trades the claustrophobic French streets for a brighter, myth-laden Cretan setting.

However, a warmer aesthetic does not mean a safer journey. Asobo Studio appears to be steering the series toward a more physically active, aggressive style of action-adventure.

Active Combat: A Heavy, Physical Flow

The most immediate change in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is how Sophia handles threats. Unlike Amicia, Sophia does not carry a slingshot. Instead, her primary tactical tool is a grappling hook, which she uses to:

  • Drag ranged archers down from wooden scaffolding.
  • Pull close-range threats off-balance to open them up for counter-attacks.
  • Control the spacing of multiple aggressive enemies at once.

This mechanical shift makes combat feel much more active. Hands-on reports liken the pacing to a mix between the cinematic weight of Ryse: Son of Rome and the tactile feedback of God of War (2018). Sophia can block, dodge, and parry incoming blows, turning encounters into dynamic brawls rather than frantic scrambles for safety. If you want to study the underlying systems, our combat deep dive covers the active parrying windows and defensive maneuvers in detail.

The preview build highlights at least six distinct enemy archetypes, including:

  • Brutes: Heavy combatants wielding unblockable attacks that force you to roll and dodge rather than block.
  • Spearmen: Mid-range soldiers who utilize their reach, requiring precise spacing to overcome.
  • Sword-and-Shield Guards: Standard martial units that demand careful timing to bypass their defenses.

Sophia also possesses options for vertical stealth. Players can navigate elevated stone ruins and perform aerial drop attacks on unsuspecting guards, which adds a distinct vertical layer reminiscent of Uncharted. For more on sneaking through Crete’s ruins, consult our stealth guide.

Color-Matching Light Spheres and Cryptic Puzzles

Puzzles remain central to the experience, but they are no longer just about avoiding immediate death in the dark. The preview showcase introduces a portable, light-emitting sphere that serves a dual purpose:

  1. Reflective Alignment: Players must align colored light beams emitted by the sphere with matching crystals embedded in the Minoan ruins to unlock massive stone gates.
  2. Hidden Path Revelation: The sphere acts as a localized torch, exposing invisible trails, warning signs, and hidden environmental traps that are otherwise impossible to see.

Asobo avoids treating these mechanics as one-off novelties. Puzzles in the mid-game chapters require you to actively combine these light systems, shifting between combat positioning and mechanical alignment. You can find breakdown strategies for these ruins in our light puzzles guide.

Sun-Drenched Ruins and a Contrasted Folk Score

Visually, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy presents a lighter, more colorful rendition of the Mediterranean, contrasting with the dark despair of Innocence and Requiem. Interestingly, no rats were encountered during the two-hour preview of chapters five and six. While the iconic rat swarms are absent from the early Cretan ruins, players will still face ominous supernatural threats lurking in the shadows as Sophia seeks the truth behind the Prima Macula.

This thematic contrast extends to the soundtrack. BAFTA-nominated composer Olivier Derivière returns with a Greek-Cypriot score, recorded in collaboration with local musicians. The debut track, “The Land,” features Cyprus’s own Amalgamation Choir—a 20-piece female vocal group led by Vasiliki Anastasiou. Singing in their native tongue, the ensemble provides a haunting, folk-driven layer that sets a grander, more mythical tone for Sophia’s expedition.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is scheduled to launch on August 27, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It will also be available on day one via Xbox Game Pass. For details on special editions and bonuses, check our guide on preorder editions.
